Meeting called to order at 7:05

Jerry said Steve Lumpkin from Parks and Recreation will be attending the neighborhood meeting tomorrow night 7/26 to discuss the NEAT program. Adopting a park is a formal process and he will have contracts for people to sign.

Things that happened this week:

  • Discussed National Night Out – issues and contract lists.
    • Jerry talked about what to expect at nat’l night out events.
    • Jerry invited everyone to their area for the evening.
    • Mike mentioned that his family was going to all the events in the area and encouraged the Board to attend as well.
  • Discussed neighborhood watch.
    •  Mike spoke of how many homes are in each designated area. Bronda Smith is to give out more information on what each coordinator is expected to do.
    • Julie suggested there be coordinators under each neighborhood watch coordinator to create more unity. An example was suggested to have a coordinator for activities, NEAT, VACE, political interest, fundraising and neighborhood watch.

Mike said the Police Department is coming to the neighborhood meeting to address the homeless issue in the area.

Edgar stated he felt it was important to have a Board Mission Statement and to have committees.

Everyone talked about and liked the current Mission Statement:

Making our neighborhood safe, clean, and beautiful through community involvement.

Discussed agenda for the 2nd neighborhood meeting 7/26/06:

  • Guests
  • Let neighbors voice their concerns
  • Sign-Ups
  • Homeless Issue – it was decided that the board’s stance at this time is to not judge or make decisions without having knowledge of the homeless community and the mission. The Board is to check into the Mission and it’s guidelines plus research our homeless population.
  • Neighborhood watch and National night out.
  • Streets

Jerry mentioned the Stanislaus Homeless Outreach Program. It’s a contract program funded by the county. Greg Forni lives in our neighborhood and is involved.

Edgar agreed to take on Modesto Bee Advertising for future meetings.

It was suggested that we have a retreat for the Board to come up with goals and to clearly define what we want to do.

Committees for Board to oversee are: Homeless, neighborhood watch, fundraising, walkers, activity committees, grant writing, clean-up and gardening, political action. Frank suggested we narrow those down a bit to neighborhood watch, NEAT/VACE, fundraising/grants, and political action (schools, streets, homeless, etc.)

MOTION PASSED TO ACCEPT THE FOUR CATEGORIES FOR COMMITTEES FOR THE BOARD TO OVERSEE.

The board chose what committees they would like to oversee and they are as follows:

Edgar: Fundraising and neighborhood watch

Jerry: NEAT and fundraising

Julie: Political action, NEAT.

Dave: Neighborhood watch, political action.

Kathy: Fundraising, NEAT.

Frank: Neighborhood watch, political action.

Andy: Fundraising, NEAT.

Mike: Political action, NEAT
