Meeting was called to order by Board President, Michael Moradian, Jr. at 6:15 pm.

UPDATE SINCE LAST MEETING

The LLNA Board and Neighborhood Watch Coordinators have met to discuss expectations.  Several Coordinators will be organizing Neighborhood National Night Out events; others are still welcome to join the Bonita – Buena Vista group.  See Edgar Garcia for neighborhood maps.

The LLNA Board has formed four action committees:  N.E.A.T., Neighborhood Watch, Fundraising, and P.A.C.

N.E.A.T. (Neighborhood Environmental Action Team) – Steve Lumpkin, Guest Speaker

Through the City of Modesto, people can adopt an area to augment a service.  Suggestions include locking restrooms at night; adopting planters; cleaning up parks, picking up litter, covering graffiti, etc.  City will provide all supplies (i.e. paint, buckets, grabbers, garbage bags, tools, etc.).  LLNA still needs someone to volunteer to coordinate this program with Steve Lumpkin.

V.A.C.E. (Volunteers Assisting Code Enforcement)

Code Enforcement through neighbors.  Need 4-5 volunteers to assist in other neighborhoods other than their own.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH – Cornerstone of the Association; 17micro communities

Bronda Smith is the Coordinator.  The LLNA would like to have a welcoming committee for new La Loma neighbors.  4 – 6 Neighborhood Watch areas are having their own National Night Out events this year.  The LLNA Board will assist in any way needed to help make this a success.  Bronda Smith will be getting a list of active Neighborhood Watch areas so we can eliminate any possible overlaps.  Neighborhood Watch Coordinators will be responsible for handing out newsletters.

FUNDRAISING – Anet Reclusado, Chair

Need people to donate money and/or assist with grant writing.

P.A.C. (Political Action Committee) – Michael Moradian, Chair

Probably the most important committee identified.  P.A.C. will focus on pressuring the City Council to address neighborhood / city concerns (i.e. homeless / vagrant issue, street safety).  P.A.C. will ask the City to take a stand on the homeless issue.  P.A.C. will meet with personnel from the Gospel Mission to find out more about their program.  We need to do some research, and refrain from making assumptions / jumping to conclusions.  Want to make sure that we are not taking a political stance in which we would split the association.

TRANSIENT / HOMELESSNESS – Guest Speakers, Officers Joel Broumas & Tom Rhea

The City of Modesto is in the process of trying to pass an ordinance, similar to one in Turlock, in which “dumpster diving” would be outlawed.

Call 572-9869 to report suspicious behaviors / persons.

Addressing the issue through the following:

  • Park curfew - all parks closed 10 pm – 6 am unless special event
  • Police go into the parks weekly and vary their times
  • Park and nuisance patrol at least weekly
  • Police team up with Honor Farm weekly to clean up parks
  • Opposite sex not allowed in bathrooms
  • Enforcement of leash laws and animal licensure
  • Bicycle helmet / safety enforced
  • Frequent police patrols to help decrease crime
  • Janeen Trevino (MPD) posts a “Hot Spot” for offices weekly, If requested, police will patrol / sweep area for safety prior to citizens cleaning up

Remember … don’t get frustrated!  Frequent calls to police will identify a need for more resources!

FUTURE MEETINGS

The LLNA will only have 1-2 formal meetings a year.  Our focus will to be proactive, and spend our time and resources making a difference in our community.

LLNA will stay in contact through monthly newsletters, e-mail and Neighborhood Watch Coordinators.  All are encouraged to contact Michael Moradian directly if needbe.  We have over 3,000 residential homes in our area!

Reminder … Jerry Frad and Julie Anderson are the contact persons for monthly clean-up days.  People will not necessarily receive a telephone reminder.  Please mark your calendars.  If you are unable to attend, or would like to adopt your own area, please take steps to do so.
